Microsoft makes it relatively easy to install additional keyboard layouts into Windows 10.

To showcase the ability to install additional keyboard layouts into Windows 10, examples from the Carpalx project will be used.

1) Install the Carpalx keyboard layouts

Firstly download and unzip the carpalx-msklc-0.10.zip file from the website:

http://mkweb.bcgsc.ca/carpalx/?download_carpalx

The download has eight setup.exe files in total for the eight keyboard layouts.

The eight keyboard layouts are:

  • Carpalx GYLMWP
  • Carpalx PBFMWJ
  • Carpalx QFMLWY
  • Carpalx QGMLWB
  • Carpalx QGMLWY
  • Carpalx QWKRFY
  • Carpalx QWYRFM
  • Carpalx TNWMLC

Install all or any of those layouts by running the appropriate setup.exe.

2) Enable visibility from the task bar

It’s always helpful to be able to view and select the keyboard layout from the task bar.

To do this ensure the ‘Use the desktop language bar when it’s available’ is checked from the language advanced settings.

Also for convenience, choose options, and ‘Docked in the taskbar’.

Now just logout and login again.

3) Verification

Click on the keyboard icon to view all the installed keyboard layouts.

From here you can also select the keyboard layout you prefer, and type away…..

Uninstall

It’s unlikely that an uninstall will ever be necessary because you can choose the default keyboard layout at any time. No need to logout, and login.

However to uninstall, just go to apps & features and choose the layout to uninstall.

Layout creation

If you run out of layouts to install then create you own with the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC) Version 1.4
