I was in the same boat as you — for over a decade I never learned to touch type in Qwerty, so I always had bad typing habits.

Then I learned to touch type, but not using the Qwerty layout.

On the occasions when I need to use Qwerty, I look at the keyboard while using it, so I still never touch type using Qwerty.

For layouts designed from a clean slate, including new locations for punctuation, consider learning Dvorak or Halmak.

Either of these layouts may be more suitable for you.
